  • Joyce Hessen Memorial Tribute

    A Wednesday session at the Bridge Centre on 15th January was devoted as a tribute to Joyce Hessen who passed away a few months' ago. Joyce was a long-standing doyen of the bridge world in Cape Town for many years - as a player, as a teacher and as an organiser. Her passion for bridge knew no bounds and she was instrumental in setting up the Friendship Club.   • Festival of Bridge

    The annual WCBU face-to-face Festival of Bridge took place at the Bridge Centre, Green Point, Cape Town on 14th/15th/16th December. The Teams event was won by the Pincus Team (Pincus/Gower/Apteker/Apteker) with the Narunsky Team (Narunsky/Alexander/Herz/Boehlke) in 2nd place.   • WCBU Open Day

    The annual Open Day, where school children, beginner and social bridge players can get together to play bridge under supervision in a friendly atmosphere, took place in the bowls clubhouse at the Western Province Cricket Club on Sunday 8th September. There were approximately 20 children from schools in Bonteheuwel with teachers to assist them, as well as a section of 26 adults.   • Western Cape Pairs Championships

    The Western Cape Pairs Championships, one of the premier Red points events in the calendar, took place on the 24th and 25th August at the Bridge Centre. There were 23 pairs who participated. On cold and rainy winter days, there is nothing better than spending a weekend playing bridge in a convivial atmosphere with delicious teas and lunches in between the challenging boards.   • Pro-Am Event - WOW!

    A Pro-Am session was held at the Bridge Centre on Saturday 3rd August. While the regular Trumps session was being played in the main room, there were 12 tables set up in the smaller room for the parallel Pro-Am session. There were 106 players in total on Saturday afternoon. Jocelyn Ashberg organised the event in tandem with Lara Woznica and her bevy of learners, as well as with a few other bridge teachers and their students.
